Kulture Ko: The beginnings
After living and working in HR around the concrete jungles of the New York City area, curiosity led me to explore the island culture and work culture in the Philippines. In January 2018, I took a trip to La Union, Philippines to surf and attend an HR meeting by the beach.
I had a meeting with Kiddo, Founder of El Union coffee, to talk about Human Resources over a few cups of the infamous El Union dirty horchatas. After 10 years of being in Human Resources, this was the first HR meeting I’ve experienced workplace culture being the main topic. The results of a unique El Union workplace culture were great. The team worked well together and had fun surfing together. This was unique for me because I’ve always experienced culture being under the Human Resources department, but what if Human Resources was under Culture?
The “What if?” became the “What is” of KultureKo while I sat on my surfboard during the sunset surfing session reflecting on my learnings today. The idea of KultureKo was formed on the foundation of prioritizing human culture before human resources in order to see happier people in the workplace.
